New Zealand Mandates Cryptocurrency Education in National Curriculum
New Zealand will implement compulsory financial literacy education for all students aged 5-15 by 2027, marking one of the world's first national curricula to incorporate cryptocurrency and blockchain fundamentals. The initiative addresses a critical gap - only 25% of students currently receive any formal financial education according to Retirement Commission data.
The progressive rollout begins in 2026 with teacher training programs developed in partnership with the University of Waikato and Cryptocurrency NZ. Coursework will blend traditional finance concepts with cutting-edge digital asset education, including hands-on blockchain simulations and token economics.
Education Minister Erica Stanford framed the MOVE as essential preparation for a digitized economy: 'We're equipping young Kiwis with the tools to navigate both traditional finance and emerging technologies like blockchain.' The curriculum will integrate cryptocurrency modules alongside core topics like budgeting, taxation, and investment strategies.
